One of the most expensive appliances in our homes are the ones responsible for heating and cooling. If we don’t use them correctly, we will end up with a great bill showing up in our mailboxes, and that’s never good news. The following ones, are some tips designed to be cheap and effective in order to save a lot of money in energy bills.
First thing you need to understand, if you don’t already, is that the easiest way to waste money in heating or cooling is to have a faulty insulation at home. So, would you let a hole in your walls? If you do, heat and cold will escape, your machines will need to work harder and you will pay a bigger bill. That’s how it works in a nutshell. So yes, nobody lets holes in the walls but there are some issues that may not look like a hole, but be like a hole, here are a few examples.
- If you have an attic, remove that pull-down attic stairs at once. They are responsible for a power loss of up to 50% because in summer heat is going down and in winter it happens the same with cold. The solution here is pretty easy, install an attic hatch cover. Some of them are made of foam and are almost inexpensive. You will have access to your attic and you will be saving a lot of money.
- Seal outlets and switches when they are leading to the exterior. Yes, you may think this is not really a big deal, but they are a source of power loss. In summer warm air coming from the outside leaks inside through it and heats the interior of the house, causing the loss of energy and the money waste. Just for a few cents you can buy a foam sealer to fit behind the plate. Installing them is as easy as to unscrew the plate, install the sealer and then put the plate back. Money saved.
- Of course, the most important by far and the one that makes people lose more money is the lack of weatherstripping or a faulty one. If you live in an old house, maybe it didn’t have any weatherstripping or, it fell off long ago and nobody replaced it. That is really a bad idea, these strips are saving you a lot of money in heating and cooling. To make an example, just a ¼” gap around your door or window equals to have a 9” hole in a wall. Not only bugs and other small animals can go through it, it also makes you lose a lot of money due to lack of insulation. Even if you just have a tiny 1/8” gap around your door, that equals to a 6” hole and, you will never let a hole like that in your house right? Just install a proper weatherstripping and you will see the difference.
- You can reduce your bills on A/C power consumption. When completely closed and lowered on a sunny window, highly reflective window blinds can reduce heat gain by around 40%.Save energy and money in style with some good blockout Roman blinds.
